All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt : A Group Exhibition

Overview
There’s a sense of despondence to the common souvenir template: “I went to x and all I got was this lousy t-shirt”. A t-shirt could never adequately conjure the experience that it refers to, is what it seems to suggest. What purposes do these souvenirs serve, then?

Like the lousy t-shirt, the exhibition showcases various artistic strategies for memory work. These artworks are specifically evocative, reaching for a tangible connection between the present object and a remembrance of places and events past. By reworking souvenirs or imagining them into existence, these artists express a belief in artworks as mnemonic devices, capable of storing and prompting these memories for future recollection.

These artworks aren’t afraid to dwell in paraphernalia, either, serving as a reminder that sentimentality can surprise us with its forceful attachment to the mundane and everyday. They make references to things but also people, as gestures to our collective transience and how, one day, our legacies might be represented in lousy t-shirts or other unexpected forms.
